So what is the optimum viewing distance? In addition to the size of the screen, it depends, inevitably, also on its native resolution: the higher the resolution of the panel, will be smaller than the pixels. In practice, resolution and screen sizes follow an opposite path. In the case of a display with a standard definition (SD), the optimal viewing distance is about 3 times the size of the screen. In the case of 1080p displays so fashionable modern, optimal viewing distance drops to 1.5 times the size of the screen.

A CRT display has a fixed resolution, but you can see, based on the characteristics of the cathode, a series of resolutions. An example that might come in handy to understand that the sole prerogative of the CRT is to consider the case of an old monitor in the remaining signal range supported closely related to its bandwidth, the monitor is capable of displaying signals indiscriminately 640×480, 800×600 , 1024×768, and so on. In other words, the thing that mattered at this juncture had supported the resolution and, not coincidentally, these screens were also called “multires”.

Going back in television, however, the situation was extremely simple: the signal until a few years ago essentially followed the dictates of PAL, SECAM and NTSC, 720×480 and 720×576 resolutions, supported – and then view – from all CRT trade.

All current displays (plasma, LCD, OLED, etc..) Have to be abandoned the traditional scanning of the CRT in favor of a dot matrix, and therefore also called “monores” means any information contained in the video signal to be displayed by the respective pixels of the matrix. Easy, right? In some ways yes, others a little less.

Over the past 10 years, has begun to catch on the HDTV standard, which not only think in terms of pixels instead of lines, brings some interesting news regarding the color space, but especially for the resolution of the video signal. We move, in fact, the old resolution 720×576 pixels up to 1920×1080, not without going through intermediate resolutions as 1.280×720.

The TV market has in fact followed the same pattern: initially the resolution matrix of the first panels reflected mainly SD resolution, only to evolve gradually towards the full HD resolution so popular. What is Full HD? Simple, 1920×1080 progressive scan points, otherwise known as 1080p.

The number of pixels that form the matrix of a panel is of course fixed, and why we talk about native resolution, as we have seen and as we shall see shortly, is very different from the resolution capabilities of the old TV tube. This conceptual difference has created in the past, many problems for unsuspecting consumers.

The first plasma display appeared on the market had a native resolution of the panel, typically equal to 852×480 pixels, then following the standard NTSC SD. The confusion arose when these screens also accept incoming video signals with higher resolution, ie 720p. A bit ‘for lack of technical knowledge, a little’ bad faith of certain traders, these first screens were done for standard resolution for HD, even though they had only the compatibility of HD input.

As we said, the pixels available for each panel are fixed number, then how is it possible that the screen is able to accept higher resolutions? Within each display is a special section where there is the so-called mail, which, among other things, is also involved in adapting the various incoming video signals to the native resolution of the panel. This “adaptation” is technically called scaling and works through a process of interpolation of pixels, which would create points that do not exist in the original signal. In the specific case of the example above, it is called downscaling (scaling down), precisely to indicate that switching from one video signal with higher resolution to a lower resolution (from 852×480 to 1.280×720). Otherwise, it is called upscaling to indicate the transformation from a lower resolution to a higher (from 720×576 to 1920×1080, for example).

So few consumers have not been “duped”, convinced that they had purchased an HD display when the images were actually displayed in SD. We thought after the EICTA (European Information & Communications Technology Industry Association) to clarify the issue by introducing the HD Ready logo.

In this way a problem was averted at the very least. What we now need to know which is the process of scaling, creating pixels that do not exist, inevitably alters the video signal and worsens the original, how much, will depend entirely on the quality of the video processor that will take care of this delicate operation. The ideal would be to obtain a display with a native resolution coincides with that of the video signal, a task impossible for now given the multitude of sources here today, each with its own resolution.

Just think of the Blu-ray Disc include a 1080p resolution, Sky HD resolutions, as appropriate, 1080i or 720p, digital terrestrial anchored to the resolution 720×576. So a compromise must be found based on your habits. If you plan to use with standard resolution signals typically, most likely will not agree to go too far with the panel’s native resolution (the scaler will intervene less). Therefore, taking also into account the issue of viewing distance that we have already discussed in the previous paragraph, could also agree to buy a HD Ready display instead of a modern HD. Surprised, right?

Ratio of contrast and brightness

Along with the resolution, contrast ratio is the other main theme of the twenty-first century. Absolutely not to be confused with the controls on the TV to adjust the screen brightness, contrast ratio is a clear indicator of the excursion that can characterize a dynamic display.

We talk about contrast ratio because it is commonly referred to as a ratio (1000:1, for example) within the maximum and minimum brightness on the display expressed in cd/m2 (candela per square meter). The maximum value is represented by white, the minimum black. Of course, the contrast ratio must be as high as possible in order to have an image as faithful to reality.

The goal is to play a credible amount of light in outdoor scenes, and at the same time, all the detail in darker scenes. 1000:1 means just that the value of white registered by a special instrument, placed on the reading of the amount of light, is 1000 times greater than the value of black.

However, the notion of contrast ratio hides some snare. First, as we said, it is given by the ratio of maximum light (white) in the numerator and minimal light (black) in the denominator. Therefore, the numerical value as emphasized by special marketing campaigns is closely related to these two sizes in equal measure. Are not rare cases in which a declared value of the house is consistent, in fact, a high blank value and a value of black is not exactly optimal. The numerical result was encouraging, given the quality of the screen, not.

This is because a high absolute value of the brightness of the screen can be useful only in cases where you need to watch TV in bright ambient light. Situation is not exactly ideal for movie fans, who are accustomed to watching their favorite movies in darkened environments, specifically in order to create the right atmosphere. Then, assuming a given value declared by the house (which, for simplicity of exposition, we consider true), it is good to prefer a lower brightness value.

But it is to trust the data declared by manufacturers? Honestly, it is best to trust your eyes and less to the value we read on the flyer or the technical guy. This does not mean that producers are not honest, but simply that each uses a different measurement system (and not said) and that for the same performance, returns different numerical values. So it could be misleading to compare the declared value of the two displays, as well as different technologies, even different brands.

Here, then, you add the issue of dynamic contrast – often indicated on the flyers as a contrast Full on / Full off – the main architect of the values ​​that distinguish the exorbitant display of recent production. In essence, the latest digital displays carry a particular algorithm can significantly reduce the power of the lamp that backlights the panel when there are dark scenes, and expands when we clear scenes. If we were to measure the black in this case, we would have a very low value, while the value of the white would be exorbitant. From here, a remarkable contrast ratio! Too bad that the wonders of dynamic contrast go to hell when we screen at the same time, both black and white image, or the normal conditions of use.

Much more important is the so-called ANSI contrast, which is the measure of the level of white and black on the screen when we have a classic checkerboard squares made by whites and blacks. Keep in mind that, in spite of a million to one (1,000,000:1) of some campaigns, being able to have a contrast ratio of 600:1 ANSI would be a remarkable achievement.

Response time of the pixels and scan frequency

One problem typically associated with LCD technology is the pixel response time, otherwise known as latency or speed of rotation of the crystals. It is the main architect of the annoying ghosting that may occur in case of fast-moving images. The importance of this feature is, then, closely linked to the use of TV, especially if you are passionate about video games.

Obviously the response time, indicated in ms, should be as low as possible. It measures the time between the passage of a pixel from black (off) to white (on) and then back to black and gives us a clear measure of how long it takes the panel to redraw a new image.

Just like the contrast ratio, the declared value of the house may be too accommodating. Again, the measurement techniques can differ among various models, especially since many homes have replaced the usual measuring BtB (Black to Black, black to black) with GtG (Grey to Grey, gray to gray) which is just to replace the gray instead of black as a point of departure and arrival.

Also to consider is that, regardless of the measurement technique, the value should be evaluated according to the scale as a whole, for each step, the pixel response time is different: in the dark parts will be slower and faster in the clear. Of course, manufacturers declare the value to them best.

It has nothing to do, however, the scanning frequency of the wakes due to a pixel response is not optimal. Remember that the scan rate indicates the refresh rate of a video sequence and specifically in the case of the old tube technology, indicates how many times per second the electron beam repaints the image.

The film material is produced mainly at 24Hz, while the television is made at 50 or 60Hz, depending on the continents. For this reason, all you need is a display that supports up to 60Hz for a scan to be in place. Nevertheless, in recent times we are seeing a doubling and even quadrupling of the refresh rate for LCD display. Although conceptually similar to the digital displays the refresh rate works very differently than the CRT.

In the case of LCD displays for example, to get a scan at 100 Hz is not the same redesigned frames faster, but it adds a completely new one, interpolating, thanks to a sophisticated video processor, the previous frame to the next one. In the case of 200Hz, however, are created 3 frames instead of one. This technique was necessary because of the problems that plague their liquid crystal displays with moving images, which very often, in times of agitated movements, tend to lose definition. Of course, to create something that brings with it there is, inevitably, problems due to the creation of digital artifacts and, therefore, you should assess in each case what is the answer to these characteristics of your eyes.

The viewing angle

The viewing angle has always been characterized as one of the problems that plague LCD TVs for some time, but often information pertaining to this issue are totally ignored in discussions of this technology. If the angle of view is too narrow, viewers who are not exactly in the center of the TV will not see the images with the same quality as perceived by the viewer from the central position, but will receive in a blurred, low contrast and colors that may appear garbled.

This was the case, especially the first generation of LCD TV, and since then, fortunately, things have improved greatly, thanks to the efforts of manufacturers to improve this aspect considerably. Close angle may be acceptable for a computer monitor, as is usually used by one person positioned directly in front of it. In this case you will be able, alone, to quantify the loss of quality and the angle beyond which the vision is not acceptable, simply move left and right, but also in low or high, relative to the center of the screen .

Much the same could be done for consistency: the brightness, contrast and thus, are not equal and uniform throughout the screen, but in this new product is no longer a factor of concern since even in CRT TV 16: 9 there is a problem, especially at the corners of the screen.
